Welding of Hardfacing for the Crushing, Mixing, Rendering, and Grinding Industries

Project description

Hammermill blades for cleaning non-aqueous-based drilling fluids (NABF) and cuttings to levels permitted for discharge.

Tungsten carbide offers some of the most advanced wear resistance available on the market today for industrial applications. At Durum USA, we have decades of experience in providing tungsten carbide hardfacing, and our excellent reputation secured us the project outlined here. A customer in the energy and mining industry needed hardfaced hammermill blades for cleaning non-aqueous-based drilling fluids (NABF) and cuttings down to levels permitted for discharge. We employed Durmat® NIFD, our own product containing fused tungsten carbide (FTC) in a nickel alloy matrix. This product is specially designed for hardfacing metal and alloy tools that are subject to all levels of abrasion, wear, and corrosion. It features a typical hardness that ranges from 2360 HV to 3000 HV. We used gas metal arc welding (GMAW) to apply the Durmat® NIFD to low carbon steel plate. Because the customer needed a thicker overlay than usual, we applied the Durmat® NIFD in multiple layers. We also needed to take care that the plate was not distorted due to the arc welding process. Thorough testing and inspection were completed for both thermal control and overlay thickness. Our customer was pleased with the end result. We were able to complete and deliver these hammermill blades to our domestic customer within just 3 days while meeting all of our customer’s specifications.
